Goalies Corner
AVHA Goalie Development Program
Prior to the 2009/2010 season, the AVHA Board and Player Development Coordinator decided to take a more proactive role in goaltender development. This decision led to the appointment of a Goalie Consultant/Coach to directly address the specific training needs of our goaltenders. Starting with the 09/10 season, ProHybrid Training was hired to address this need.
Coach Zach Sikich and his professional coaching staff conducted 7 Goalie Clinics for our players throughout the season. Coach Sikich also held 2 Coaches Clinics to bring our coaching cadre up to speed on the latest concepts in goalie techniques and psychology, goalie training, and goalie practice plans. While there was an improvement in goalie development, we failed to take full advantage of the opportunity that this new program provided.
During the post season wrap-up for 2009/2010, the AVHA Board recognized the benefits of a professional consultant for our goaltenders, but also saw the need to better utilize these resources to fully realize the potential of a Goalie Development Program. In March of 2010, the board decided to establish the position of Goalie Coordinator to work as an advocate on behalf of AVHA Goaltenders, their parents, and the association to provide better communication, coordination, and cooperation between players, coaches, parents, the AVHA PDC, and the AVHA Board.
The "Goalies Corner" is the first step in improving the communication with our goalie families. Check back often as this section grows.
I am very optimistic that the path the board has chosen is a very positive step in the right direction. We are in a great position to provide a first-class Goaltender Development Program for our players. However, this cannot be a success without the support of the parents, coaches, and players. I am asking for that support. We need you to read our emails, check the goalie calendar, check the "Goalies Corner" regularly, and take full advantage of the training opportunities that will be provided for our goalies.
I am ready to work on behalf of our goalies, goalie parents, and coaches. Together, we can build a strong program and develop our goaltenders to their fullest potential. Don't hesitate to email me with any questions, concerns, or ideas: goalie.coordinator@applevalleyhockey.com
Thanks In Advance...
Tony Westcot, AVHA Goalie Coordinator
